Microdermabrasion Q & A
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion uses tiny particles of aluminum oxide to bombard and remove the upper layers of skin, reducing or eliminating fine lines and wrinkles as well as acne scarring and sun damage to reveal softer, fresher-looking skin underneath. Plus, it can help promote development of collagen, one of the building blocks of healthy skin, resulting in firmer, more resilient skin over time.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can reduce or eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as acne scars, promote a more even skin tone, reduce pore size, revitalize dull skin and smooth rough or uneven skin texture. By promoting collagen production, it can also help your skin regain some of its youthful elasticity and resilience.
What is a treatment like?
The procedure begins with application of a cleansing gel to help prepare your skin for treatment. During the actual procedure, a hand-held device or wand is moved slowly over your skin while the gently abrading microcrystals remove the upper layers of dead and damaged skin. At the same time, the device vacuums away dead skin particles to reveal the fresher, smoother skin underneath. Once the procedure is complete, a special cream is applied to soothe skin and to serve as a sunblock. An average treatment takes less than an hour to perform.
Am I a good candidate for microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can be used for most skin types and tones, and although it's a great procedure for many men and women, it's not the ideal choice for everyone. If you have active acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or another chronic skin condition, microdermabrasion is probably not a good option for you. Dr. Matt can help you learn about other options that are more appropriate for your needs.
