Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Q & A
What is intense pulsed light therapy (IPL)?
IPL uses intense light of specially designed lasers to restore a youthful appearance to aging, dull skin, removing or reducing the appearance of wrinkles, lines and other signs of aging as well as discolored areas and blemishes. Plus, IPL rejuvenates skin's texture, resulting in smoother, more even texture and tone. IPL can be used on the face as well as the hands, neck and chest to remove freckles and age spots and tone and tighten lax skin.
How is IPL performed?
IPL is performed as an outpatient treatment with no “downtime,” so you can resume your activities right after treatment. Prior to the procedure, a cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area to ensure your comfort throughout treatment. The IPL hand piece will be moved gently across your skin, delivering strong pulses of intense light to the treatment area. Each treatment lasts about 20 minutes and most patients find they achieve the best results with four to six treatments. In some cases, especially if you have sensitive skin, you may notice some redness following treatment which may persist for a day or two afterward. You'll also need to avoid the sun for two weeks or so following treatment as your skin heals.
When will I see results?
Most patients notice results after their first session, with continued visible improvement after each subsequent treatment. Each treatment can be customized to your skin type and individual needs for optimal results.
How long will the results last?
Results typically last for a year or more, depending in part upon how well you care for your skin and protect it from the sun and environmental damage following treatment. Some patients undergo occasional “maintenance” treatments to prolong their initial results.
